Running “Export this list (Excel)” times out.

The Excel format has a lot of overhead and is not suitable for large lists. Instead try the “Export this list (CSV) for the bigger lists. Excel is best suited for databases with special characters in the data fields - if you need to export a large data set in Excel format, you can segment your data into smaller batches and export them a batch at a time.
